Wearing a vibrant yellow embroidered blazer with dark pink godet lehnga and a sheer yellow dupatta, Carol Gracias made all the heads turn as she walked on ramp for Gauri Couture at Asian Designer Week 2016. She ruled the ramp with her majestic walk, unmatched confidence and sultry looks on the ramp and truly looked like a warrior princess, just so as the designers Nikheil and Rivendra expected her to be.
But before she made a conspicuous presence on the ramp and made the audiences gasp for breath, she spent a whole day being a chirpy girl next door girl that she is. She walked out of the airport in casual attire with pushed back hair and black glasses as I received her while being a little cautious for wanting everything to go right. As an introvert myself, not sure whether I would be able to deal with a “supermodel” attitude, as they say, I sat next to her in the back seat but soon the cold air cleared and I started the conversation with the casual, “How was your flight?” And “You must be a little tired”. She smiled and said, “Yeah it was a bit but I’m good now”.
There was a silence for a minute before I had a fan girl moment as I started telling her about how I read an article about her in a magazine which made me admire her a lot. She smiled and said that’s sweet after which she told me her experiences in the model industry and asked about my experiences as a fashion designer and blogger.
I then, told her the plan for the day while we were in the cab, that she can rest for a few hours, try the outfit for fittings and then at 4 pm the makeup artists will arrive at the hotel. As soon as we checked into the hotel, she asked me to come along to her room and try that outfit, which gladly fitted her perfectly. I finally asked her to have a picture with me and she happily said yes, being every bit of comfortable in her naturally gorgeous skin. There were a few things that were tiny bit deviated from the plan but she was adaptable, cooperative and never the one to throw a staryy tantrum, as I thought there would be.
I left the room and received a call from her 4pm sharp, “Did the makeup guys arrive yet?”, she asked “They’re just coming here in 10 minutes”, I replied. I was glad to see such punctuality from her. She welcomed the makeup artists with a warm smile and as the makeup artist started with her job she told Carol how she’s feeling nervous around her because she is a supermodel and done this a million times. Carol told them to relax and consider as her normal client after which she ordered coffee for them.
As a beginner into the Fashion Industry, I have come across only a few people from the glamor world and just like any other person I had this “different” perception about models but meeting Carol changed my opinion, for good. After her makeup was done she happily clicked several pictures with all the makeup artists and me as well. As she waited to leave for the show arena, she runs around in the room to find the perfect lighting for a great selfie to send it to her husband.
After a while, we all left for the fashion show venue where she floors everyone as she walks down the ramp. As the show is over, she rushes to remove her uncomfortable shoes but stops as the media calls her for pictures, where she poses like a pro despite a tiring day and midnight time on the clock. I left the venue to drop her back her friend’s house when she excitedly tells me about her friend’s baby and then calls her husband and checks up on her little bundle of joy.
This one day with the lovely Carol Gracias made me realize that despite all the glamor, lights, paparazzi, the glitz and the limelight, celebrities are just like us. At the end of the day, they feel the same emotions like everyone else and love their work and their family. She hugged it out with me as she left and thanked me for the day and in turn I told her “It was really a pleasure meeting you”. Indeed!
