10 futuristic designers who’re taking runway fashion to the next level

While there are a number of designers who stick to the traditional and conventional ways of designing clothes, there is a whole different realm of designers who are breaking the conventions and transforming the term Fashion, as we know it. The garments designed by the following designers look right out of a science fiction movie.

One can only observe those garments and wonder where does their inspiration comes from and the kind of construction techniques that are used to create these fashion pieces. Nonetheless, they are sure to leave you amused and fascinated with their absolutely interesting and innovative designs.

1. Junya Watanabe

Born in Fukushima, Japan, Junya Watanabe is known to design distinct and unconventional clothing. He has used technologically advanced textiles and fabrics in several of his collections and also worked with traditional fabrics like cotton to create amusing designs.

2. Iris Van Herpen

This Dutch designer is known for her highly innovative and futuristic designs. She uses groundbreaking construction techniques like 3D printing technology to create garments that look no less than an art masterpiece. Her designs speak loudly of skilled craftsmanship and unmatched creativity. She created quite a buzz in the industry with her ‘Water dress’ and many other collections.

3. Victor and Rolf

Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren’s fashion house is known for its conceptual and whacky designs that challenge the pre-conceptions of fashion. Their collection perfectly depicts the fascinating concoction of fashion and art. A number of their outfits have also been circulated as memes on the internet but nonetheless, they remain one of the most benchmarking and iconic fashion brands in the industry.

4. GuoPei

Guo Pei is best known for designing the iconic, trailing yellow gown for Rihanna at the 2015 Met ball. She is a Chinese designer who combines traditional embroideries on never seen before, whimsical silhouettes. Her collections like ‘The Arabian Night’ and L’architecture for Fall Winter 2018/19 reflects the concept in the most unconventional manners possible.

5. Rachel Burke

This Australian clothing designer is known to create wearable art pieces made out of tinsels. She is making tinsel garments a mainstream fashion which otherwise, one would only imagine someone wearing in a costume or Halloween party. She is definitely one of the most innovative designers in the fashion industry.

6. Nick Cave

Nick Cave is an American sculpture artist, performer and  fashion designer, who is well known for his innovative performance ensembles called the “Soundsuits”. The whimsical outfits that he created look no less than a sculpture in action or a work of computer graphics but they are 100% tangible and worn by people. These soundsuits were created as an expression to remove cultural discrimination and send a message of bringing all human beings together.

7. Neri Oxman

Neri Oxman’s designs are the perfect combination of fashion and technology. She is an American-Israeli architect, designer and professor at the MIT media lab who is known for merging design, biology, computing and materials engineering to create stunning art pieces and fashion clothing.

8. Yohji  Yamamoto

The Japanese fashion designer is currently over 70 years old and redefining the way we see conceptual art in fashion industry. He is known for combining avant-garde tailoring featuring Japanese design aesthetics with over-sized silhouettes, mostly in a neutral color scheme.

9. Issey Miyake

Issey Miyake should be called the ‘Illusionist’ of the fashion industry. 10. Ying Gao

Last but not the least, this highly innovative and futuristic designer uses advanced technology to create ‘interactive dresses’ that will take you 20 years ahead of time.
